RENDAHNYA LITERASI MEMBACA PADA SISWA SEKOLAH DASAR: ANALISIS PERAN GURU DALAM MEMBANGUN BUDAYA MEMBACA

Abstract

Reading literacy skills are a fundamental foundation for students’ academic success at the elementary school level. However, the reality shows that the level of students’ reading literacy in Indonesia remains relatively low. This article aims to analyze the factors contributing to the low level of reading literacy among elementary school students and examine the role of teachers in developing a sustainable reading culture. The study was conducted at SDN Sempusari 02 Jember, involving 50 students from Grades I to V as research subjects. This study employed a descriptive research method, with the findings presented in the form of tables and frequency distribution graphs. The results showed that 44% of the students were categorized as having low reading literacy skills. The dominant factors influencing this condition include the limited availability of interesting reading materials, the absence of reading habits at home, and less varied learning methods. In this regard, the role of teachers has proven to be significant in improving students’ literacy through a 15-minute reading program before learning activities and the provision of rewards for students who actively engage in reading.
